Pre-Workout: Timing, Tolerance and Getting the Most From It
July 4, 2026
A good pre-workout is a tool, not a personality. Used right, it gives you sharper focus, better pumps and a couple of extra reps late in the session.
Timing
Take it 20 to 30 minutes before your first working set. Caffeine peaks in the blood around 45 to 60 minutes after ingestion, so if your commute to the gym is long, dose before you leave.
The tingles are fine
Beta-alanine causes a harmless skin-tingling called paresthesia. It fades within an hour and has nothing to do with effectiveness. If you hate the feeling, split the serving.
Protect your tolerance
- Skip pre-workout on easy sessions. Save it for the days that matter.
- Keep total daily caffeine under control, including coffee.
- Take a deload week from stimulants every 8 to 10 weeks. Sensitivity comes back fast.
- Train late? Look at non-stim options so sleep stays intact. Sleep beats any scoop.
